A few days back I was flipping through the papers at my office. A lot of discouraging news, so I sighed to my colleague that there were so many bombings going on….Iraq la, Thailand la, Philippines la…..
My colleague’s response? “Ya la, ya la, sini bom sana bom….jangan berlaku kat sini sudah.” (Yes, bombings here and there, but it’s ok just as long as it doesn’t happen here)
Talk about apathy.
“When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, He had compassion on them and healed their sick.” Matthew 14:14
“As He approached Jerusalem and saw the city, He wept over it …” Luke 19:41
Christ is compassionate, and for those of us who declare Him as Lord, we have experienced and are still experiencing His undying love and compassion. It burned on still, even in the face of the pain, suffering and death that faced Him in His path to the cross.
The world today is selfish. The in-thing is to “mind your own business and I’ll mind my own…your problems are your problems…”. Nobody bothers to care anymore. To a certain extent, it’s probably because it’s risky to be nice. But it certainly didn’t stop Jesus from being nice. As a result, the world today is void of love. It hungers and longs for true love and compassion that can only be found through the one Way, Truth and Life: Jesus Christ.
Christ showed His love during His earthly days by performing miraculous signs and physically dying on the cross. Today, since the days of Acts, Christ shows His love through His followers, indwelt by the Spirit.
The more the world doesn’t care, the more we should love and show care.
So go ahead, give charitably to that drug addicts foundation. Help the blind man cross the road. Help that lady who dropped her many shopping items all over the floor. Stop and assist the poor guy changing his flat tyre alone in the pouring rain. Smile and wish good morning to the parking attendant. Send your transport-less friend home even though it’s out of the way. Let’s give the world some love…in the name of Christ, let’s love all people (even our enemies) in word and deed. Unconditional, sacrificial. Can’t think of a better way to proclaim Christ.
“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you love one another.” John 13:34-35
